Is it a MIGRAINE?

It can be pretty hard sometimes to differentiate between a headache and a migraine.

But here’s a quick and simple guide:

Does your pain limit you from doing any activities?

Do you have a sensitivity to light/noise?

Do you suffer from nausea/lack of appetite from the pain?

If you answered yes for two or more of these – chances are, you suffer from migraines.

The pain of migraines can be quite debilitating. It can be a throbbing or pulsing pain, usually on one side of the head. But sometimes, it can attack the entire head. Some symptoms of a migraine are:

  • Pounding or throbbing
  • Nausea/vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Sensitivity to light, sound and smell
  • Tingling, pins and needles or numbness

There are more severe symptoms, but these are some of the most common.

There are certain triggers that can bring on a migraine as well, and these can be different for different people. Some can be food triggers (common), environmental triggers, hormonal triggers or emotional triggers.

Some migraines are also accompanied by an aura. An aura is usually symptoms that occur before the migraine begins, kind of like a warning sign! Some people experience visual changes, seeing bright lights or finding it difficult to focus. A migraine usually begins around an hour after that.

The cause of a migraine is unknown but the hypothesis for now is the connection and interaction between the brain and the cranial blood vessels.

Chiropractic care may help with the management of migraines. Trying to uncover the trigger to the migraines is really important but also the treatment chiropractors perform can alleviate symptoms. Taking pressure of the spine through spinal manipulation and correcting the surrounding muscles, as well as craniosacral therapy can be really soothing during a migraine or at the beginning of one.
